World famous family resort that puts you at the heart of the fun
One of the most popular theme parks in the whole of the world, Disneyland California attracts some 14 million people annually, all of whom are looking to enjoy the spectacle, thrill and family-friendly atmosphere of the resort.
Located in Anaheim, south-east of Los Angeles and in the heart of Orange County, the resort is readily accessible via Interstate 5, much of which was originally constructed at the same time as the Disneyland park. The closest international airports to the resort are Long Beach (LGB) and John Wayne (SNA).
Following a year of construction, the park officially opened its gates of 18 July 1955. The previous day had seen an invite-only unveiling. Bringing Walt Disney’s dreams of entertaining children and families to life, the theme park was much smaller than it is today; at the time it was limited to just 20 attractions. Expansion of the park has gradually taken place across the years, as well as the creation of a number of other franchise parks across the world. The Californian instance was the only park constructed prior to Walt’s death in 1966.
More than just a series of rides and attractions now, the resort features a large number of hotels, restaurants and stores. This means that guests can stay for multiple days, enjoying the playful atmosphere and spectacular sights.
Disneyland California itself is split into two parks; Disneyland Park and the Disney California Adventure Park, the latter of which opened to the public in 2001 on the site of the original parking lot.
The Disneyland Park is separated into eight different ‘lands’. Each of these has been built to completely submerge the visitor in its atmosphere, with no other part of the park to be seen or heard.
The most well-known of these lands is Main Street, U.S.A. This imitation town leads from the opening gateway offering visitors a host of rides, attractions and shops. It is this street where the majority of parades take place.
One of the most popular lands is New Orleans Square, where the Mardi Gras is reported to never end. Amongst the replica French Quarter streets visitors will find the likes of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and the Haunted Mansion. The former is the inspiration behind the famous Hollywood blockbusting franchise, whilst the latter is a massive, year-round haunted house and ghost-train style ride featuring some 999 ghosts.
The six other lands are: Fantasyland; Tomorrowland; Adventureland; Critter County; Mickey’s Toontown; and Frontierland. Each is completely unique. Guests should ensure they get a great photograph of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and enjoy the exhilarating Space Mountain ride.
The Disney California Adventure Park again features a number of separated sections focusing on individual concepts. From the insect-eye views of A Bug’s Land to the white water rapids in the Golden State, each district offers a wide range of entertainment and attractions.
Regardless of which part of Disneyland California guests find themselves in, a large number of Disney characters will be making their way around the park, so eyes should be kept peeled. Add to all of this the amazing parades, shows and firework displays, and you get one of the most enjoyable attractions in the whole of the state.
